How to spot the signs of elder abuse

By - Stouffer Legal

In order to protect your aging family member, you must remain vigilant even after carefully selecting a care facility or medical care provider.  Some common signs of elder abuse or neglect to be aware of include:

  • Excessive and/or unexplained injuries
  • Bruises or marks on wrists and/or ankles from restraints or rough handling
  • Weight loss or lack of appetite/malnutrition
  • Mood swings or anger
  • Deteriorating hygiene
  • Anxiety or depression symptoms
  • Unattended financial matters like unpaid bills
  • Missing money or valuable items

Always trust your instincts and if you suspect your loved one is the victim of elder abuse or neglect, do not hesitate to act quickly and seek help. You may first try talking to your family member, but sometimes they may be reluctant to talk about the problem because they are embarrassed or ashamed to be a victim or they may fear retaliation from their abuser.  Be sure to contact the management of the care facility as soon as you become concerned and keep detailed records of your correspondence. If it turns out your suspicions are confirmed, immediately contact law enforcement authorities and make a report. You may also want to seek the assistance of an experience elder law attorney to guide you through the difficult process.
