The holiday was first observed on February 17, 1995, in the United States, after a group of students at a high school in California started a project called "The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation."
After George Washington's death, the Mount Vernon estate was managed by a trust and eventually sold to the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, which established a new trust that continues to manage and preserve the estate as a museum and educational center to this day.
